What is Candy Cane Chopstick Challenge?
This Candy Cane Challenge game is actually an easy holiday game I made up. (There may be games like this, but I haven’t seen them.)
We were sitting at the kitchen table and we had a bowl of candy canes for decorating the Christmas tree and also had chopsticks from Chinese food dinner.
I asked my daughter how many candy canes she thinks she could pick up and hook in 1 minute. This started a whole Christmas challenge game because it is way harder than it seems.
If you’re looking for a teen Christmas party game, add this one.
My teen daughter LOVED this game and we laughed really hard.

Object of Candy Canes Challenge
To hold a candy cane “hook” with chopsticks and see how many other candy canes you can hook and remove from the bowl in one minute.
GAME PLAY TIP: This game is way harder than you think. It may be better for teen games or adult party games. If you do it as a younger kid game, see an easier game play version below. (Young kids may have a hard time because it takes some fine motor skills.)

Candy Cane Challenge Game Supplies
To play this holiday game, you’ll need:
- Large bowl
- Individually wrapped candy canes – they can be candy canes of different sizes and colors, but they have to be the individually shrink-wrapped candies so that you can pick them up (the mini candy canes won’t work because they’re in their own little packages and will be easier to pick up)
- Chopsticks (if you are doing this for a group game, grab this cheap pack, just be sure to break them apart)
- Timer (the one on your phone is fine)
- Prize (optional, for the winner)

Game Play Instructions and Game Rules
*See fun game playing alternatives at the bottom of the post!
- Place all candy canes in a large bowl.
- Have players sit around a table. Give each player a pair of chopsticks.
- Set a timer for 1 minute.
- On go, first player uses chopsticks to pick up one candy cane by the straight end. Leave the hook end free because this will be your “hook” to try to hook candy canes.
- Using the candy cane hook (held by chopsticks), try to hook and remove as many candy canes from the bowl as you can in one minute time.
- If you drop the candy cane “hook” on the table, that doesn’t count as one of the removed candy canes. You have to place the candy cane “hook” back in the bowl. The player must then grab a new candy cane hook with chopsticks before trying to hook and remove any other candy canes.
- No scooping or sliding candy canes out of the bowl! You have to hook them on the hook cane and pick them up and out of the bowl.
- Write down the player’s score and then place all the candy canes back in the bowl. Play passes to the next person.
- The person with the most candy canes out of the bowl after everyone has gone, wins!
GAME PLAY TIP: You may want to do a cumulative score after three rounds. You’ll definitely want to try it more than one time.
Alternate Game Play Ideas
- Use different colors and sizes of individually wrapped candy canes.
- If you do it as a younger kid game you can leave out the chopsticks just have them see how many candy canes they can hook with another candy cane.
- Have a few “prize” candy canes. Color a green dot (or black marker, or whatever shows up on the candy cane colors) on a few of the candy canes and mix them pack in the bowl. Players who get candy canes with dots get to pick prize(s) out of the prize baskets. (They can be small things or fun Christmas items like this.) You can tell the players beforehand or let it be a surprise once the game starts. (Or, you can play where the dotted candy canes count as two instead of one, giving the players who get them a higher score.)
