- Queen Elizabeth II is first cousins of Queen Elizabeth I thirteen times removed, or 13 generations. They are related via King Henry VII.
- Many people bought their first television so that they could watch the new Queen’s coronation.
- Reportedly, 3 million people lined the streets to Buckingham Palace to catch a glimpse of the new Queen after her coronation on June 2, 1953.
- Some people thought she wouldn’t be a good monarch because they said her voice was boring.
- Queen Elizabeth’s favorite dogs were Corgis. The love for this breed started in childhood and she had many Corgi dogs throughout her reign. At one point she owned nine Corgis and had a total of 30 of this dog breed over her lifetime.
- Queen Elizabeth loved to breed and race thoroughbred horses.
- Horsing racing was a business for the queen and she paid millions of dollars out her own pocket for the passion business. In her lifetime, her horses won over 1,800 races!

While the Monarchy is ceremonial, like bestowing honors, it also helps with UK Parliament bills and the appointment of the Prime Minister. The Imperial State Crown is usually worn once per year at the State Opening of Parliament. The official crown is documented to weigh over 3 pounds and has 2868 diamonds, 11 sapphires, 11 emeralds, and 269 pearls. Later, Queen Elizabeth II stopped wearing the official crown because it was too heavy for her later in life.
Fun Fact: St. Edward’s Crown, part of the Crown Jewels, and worn by Queen Elizabeth II at the coronation weighs almost 5 pounds! The Crown Jewels belong to the state and St. Edward’s Crown is on display in London and the jewels are kept in the Tower Of London.
