The graduation party Post-It Note game is a funny story game using sticky notes to tell a story about your graduate! With a few cheap supplies from home, you can make a hilarious graduation party game that can also be a grad keepsake! Definitely add this to your DIY graduation party ideas to celebrate seniors or grad party activities on a budget.
How To Play The Funny Graduation Party Post-It Note Game
One of the things I love about this simple game made with supplies you already have (sticky notes and a marker) is that it creates a story for your graduate that they can keep forever with their high school scrapbook stuff!
It’s a great idea for your graduation gift table and a fun alternative to graduation signature books.
Plus, this is a game you won’t see at every other graduation open house you attend this season (and I love having unique things at my parties!).
This works for college graduation, high school graduation, or even an 8th grade graduation party!
Overview of the Graduation Story Game
The graduation sticky note game allows party guests to create a funny and silly story about the graduate by adding one sentence to the story.
But, there’s a catch!
Each guest only knows the previous sentence in the story and will build off of that sentence. All the rest of the story remains hidden until the last guest has played.
It’s a little bit like graduation MadLibs, but you’re writing an entire sentence instead of just a word.
As you can imagine, the finished sticky note story ends up being weird and funny.
This game has been a huge hit every time we’ve played it!
Graduation Sticky Note Game Supplies
To play the graduation story game, you’ll need:
- Post-It Notes (regular size)
- Markers or pens
- Tape in a dispenser (optional, but recommended, in case the sticky notes start losing their stickiness, especially if they get wet or it’s humid outside)
- A white board or large Post-It Notes like this or flipboard paper (to put the small sticky notes on)

Graduation Game Setup
Place the sticky note pad and a pen or marker on a table away from everyone else — the graduation gift table or graduation photo table is a great place for this!
On your large Post-It note, white board, or easel paper, write the directions. We wrote “Jenna’s Graduation Story: Use the Post-It Note to continue Jenna’s graduation story.”
GAME TIP: You can start your story any way you like. (Maybe it’s something like, “Once Jenna left for college she…”)
Start off the game by writing the first post-it note prompt. Again, we just used “Once upon a time, Jenna graduated…” Y
You can start your story any way you like!
To set up the sticky note game you’ll need to first set up the prompts so guests will know how to play the game and add to your graduate’s story.
I wrote the direction prompts on the big notepad in three steps:
1. Read the note on top here (no peeking at other notes!) – this is where people will stack the notes on top of each other.
2. Write something to continue the story. (Be sure to sign your name!) – this is where the blank sticky notes go.
3. Place your Post-It Note on the top so only your sentence is showing. – guests should place their sticky note with the written sentence on top of the stack in #1.
How To Play The Graduation Post-It Note Game
To play the game, each guest (individually) should do these steps (in this order):
#1: Read the visible sentence on top of the stack in Step 1.
#2: Write their own sentence on a blank sticky note to continue the story in Step 2.
#3: Place their sentence on top of the stack in Step 1.
IMPORTANT TIP: (Don’t forget to start off the game by writing the first post-it prompt for #1.)
To Finish The Story Game
You can set a timer for the game. For example, everyone must add their storyline by 4:00 p.m. Then, you can have your graduate read the story — starting from the first sticky note on the bottom of the pile and going up to the top sticky note — to the party guests.
Or, if you’re having a graduation open house where people will be coming and going at different times, you can make the interactive game ongoing and then compile the story after and share it on social media to your friends.
Either way, it’s a fun graduation keepsake and memory for your student and guests!
GRADUATION GIFT TIP: Number the Post-It notes and keep them with your other graduation scrapbook items.
Congratulations to your graduate! I hope you have tons of fun with this graduation party Post-It Note game!
